Knight Cities Challenge

Knight Foundation is currently accepting applications for the Knight Cities Challenge, a $5 million open call inviting individuals and organizations across its 26 communities to submit new, creative ideas for projects that can spark change and leave a lasting local impact.

Building on a long history of open challenges across programs, Knight democratizes access to grantmaking to unlock the best and brightest ideas. This spring, KCC returns to invest in its first cohort of community-centered solutions to local challenges and help promising ideas take root and grow.

Project ideas must focus on at least one of Knight’s investment areas: strengthening local news and information, creating pathways for economic opportunity or cultivating connection through arts, culture and the places that bring people together.

You may submit one idea, either as an individual or on behalf of your organization. While you are limited to one application as the lead applicant, you may collaborate on other projects submitted by different partners. Each individual or organization may receive funding for only one project.

For large institutions such as universities or city governments, schools or departments are considered separate entities. 

The Grand Forks Women's Fund Grant Program aims to empower girls and women by providing resources that promote economic, social, and political equality. This initiative supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and public entities that operate in Grand Forks, Walsh, or Polk County. Preference is given to new projects and grant applicants, fostering leadership skills and encouraging philanthropic engagement among women.

The Myra Foundation, established in 1941, is North Dakota's first private charitable foundation. With nearly $13 million awarded in grants, it focuses on charitable and educational purposes, primarily within Grand Forks County. The foundation prioritizes tax-exempt organizations that serve local citizens. Currently, it owns farmland, leasing it to farmers, with income directed towards its mission. This grant honors Betty Lu Lenthe's legacy and encourages creativity in its use, aiding everything from travel to workshops and equipment purchases. Open to members, students, and educational institutions, it aims to enrich public education and service across North Dakota.

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) aims to enhance environmental quality by providing financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers and forest landowners in North Dakota. The Migratory Bird Resurgence Initiative, part of EQIP, focuses on conserving wetlands to support migratory bird populations. This program emphasizes sustainable practices that improve soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitats, ultimately aiding farmers in their conservation efforts while promoting ecological balance in vital agricultural areas.

The Iseminger Endowment for the Arts Grant Program, established in 2017, aims to enhance artistic and cultural experiences in North Dakota. Funding is available for diverse art forms, with a focus on musical performances. To qualify, projects must be specific, public, and benefit local communities. Grants are capped at $22,500. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits and public entities serving Grand Forks, Walsh, or Polk County. Projects must start after October 1, 2024, and conclude by September 30, 2025. Preference may be given to new initiatives and applicants, fostering innovation and community engagement.

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors. Applications are accepted from mid-November until mid-March. Scholarship award recipients will be announced at the high school awards ceremony. 

Matthew VanFleet Memorial Automotive Scholarship

Established by Matthew’s parents and his sister in memory of Matt who passed away in an automobile accident. The scholarship provides assistance to a student who will study automotive technology. The scholarship is available to students from all the school districts in Susquehanna and Wyoming Counties.

Turlock Irrigation District Energy Scholarship

Open to high school seniors attending a high school within the TID District territory planning to pursue a career in the Energy Utility Sector. (i.e. Engineering, Environmental Science, Electrical, Lineman etc.). Must plan to attend an accredited trade school or college/university and demonstrate financial need. The household must be a TID customer.
