SFARI Mission

The mission of the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) is to advance the basic science of autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD).

To this end, we solicit applications for a new grant mechanism, the New Ideas Award, from individuals who will conduct bold, imaginative, rigorous and relevant research.

The goal of the New Ideas Award is to provide early stage support for bold, exploratory research that tests novel hypotheses and opens new conceptual or experimental directions in the study of autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). Proposed research may draw on any scientific discipline, methodology or experimental system (including humans) and may operate at any scale or level of analysis. All projects should include a compelling case for the relevance and potential of the proposed experiments to SFARI’s mission. Investigators who have not previously been funded by SFARI are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants are encouraged to consult this perspective piece for more detail on this RFA and SFARI’s scientific perspectives for context on the foundation’s guiding principles. Applicants are strongly encouraged to think beyond existing frameworks and to articulate new directions that could reshape the field. We also strongly advise applicants to familiarize themselves with the currently funded projects and resources that SFARI supports to avoid duplicating efforts. Projects that represent extensions/continuations of ongoing work (whether funded by SFARI or other funders) are not appropriate for this mechanism.

Given the RFA’s emphasis on new ideas, preliminary data are not required; however, sufficient information to demonstrate feasibility should be included.

Applicants to this RFA do not need to have worked on autism previously; investigators who have not previously been funded by SFARI are especially encouraged to apply. We encourage those new to the field to consult with experts in autism research to ensure their projects are relevant to the human condition.

SF and SFI do not provide funding to institutions in China (including institutions in Hong Kong) or to fiscal sponsors or agents of institutions in China or Hong Kong. This includes funding to support subcontracts at institutions in China or Hong Kong or consultants residing or working for institutions in China or Hong Kong.

The FY26 Autism Research Program's Idea Development Award from the US DOD aims to support groundbreaking research that improves outcomes for Autistic individuals. This award encourages innovative, high-risk projects that can lead to significant advancements in autism research. Applications must address specific areas of interest or justify the importance of the research problem. A unique Partnering Principal Investigator option allows two researchers to collaborate on a single project, enhancing the potential for impactful discoveries.

The FY26 Autism Research Program Career Development Award aims to support early-career investigators in conducting innovative research that can significantly impact autism. It encourages applications addressing specific areas of interest and mandates community collaboration for projects involving pilot clinical trials. Proposals must include partnerships with community members for effective planning and implementation, ensuring that the research is grounded in the needs of the autism community.

The FY26 Autism Research Program Clinical Trial Award aims to rapidly implement clinical trials that significantly impact autism treatment and management. Projects may range from small proof-of-concept trials to large-scale studies assessing efficacy in relevant populations. Applications are encouraged to partner experienced and early-career investigators and must include community collaborations to enhance research impact. At least one community partner is required to provide ongoing consultation throughout the project.

The Autistic Scientist Predoctoral Fellowship by Autism Speaks aims to empower autistic doctoral students pursuing careers in autism research. This fellowship provides financial support of $37,000 per year, comprising a stipend and an annual allowance for research-related expenses. With over 380 funded projects nationwide, the program supports 501(c)(3) organizations in the U.S. First-time grantees can apply for up to $10,000, while returning grantees may request up to $25,000. The program emphasizes community-based solutions and aims to enhance the quality of life for autistic individuals.
