External Collaborative Research (ECR)

The External Collaborative Research (ECR) program is open to all qualified academic and community-based scientists or consortia that are interested in proposing a study and wish to collaborate with Boehringer Ingelheim to develop a protocol and analyze and publish the results.

In addition to providing intellectual contributions, Boehringer Ingelheim may provide drug and/or financial support for an ECR. Boehringer Ingelheim does not serve as the Regulatory Sponsor for an ECR.

The preliminary budget for ECRs should reflect fair market value for all costs and cannot include direct salary support for the Principal Investigator. Budgets for ECRs will be further negotiated pending finalization of the collaborative protocol.

While the research interests listed within the therapeutic areas are of focus to Boehringer Ingelheim, other research interests may be considered.

Investigator-Initiated Studies (IIS)

In general, IIS are not registrational studies, and they may be proof of concept or exploratory in nature. The budget for these studies should reflect fair market value for all costs, and cannot include direct salary support for the Principal Investigator.

Boehringer Ingelheim may provide financial support and/or drug for an approved IIS. Boehringer Ingelheim does not serve as the regulatory sponsor for IIS. Investigators are required to apply for support via an online application process.

Rural areas including cities, villages, townships and towns including Federally Recognized Tribal Lands with no more than 20,000 residents according to the latest U.S. Census Data are eligible for this program.

How may funds be used?

Funds can be used to purchase, construct, and / or improve essential community facilities, purchase equipment and pay related project expenses.

Examples of essential community facilities include:

• Health care facilities such as hospitals, medical clinics, dental clinics, nursing homes or assisted living facilities.
• Public facilities such as town halls, courthouses, airport hangars or street improvements.
• Community support services such as child care centers, community centers, fairgrounds or transitional housing.
• Public safety services such as fire departments, police stations, prisons, police vehicles, fire trucks, public works vehicles or equipment.

Background

The Highmark Foundation is a private, charitable, organization of Highmark Inc. that supports initiatives and programs aimed at improving community health. The Highmark Foundation's mission is to improve the health, well-being and quality of life for individuals who reside in communities served by Highmark Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. We fulfill our mission by awarding high impact grants.

Ideally, the Foundation seeks evidence-based programs that impact multiple counties, that achieve replicable long-term models, and that attract collaborative funding by community partners.

Foundation grants have been awarded to hospitals, community health centers, health service organizations, local community groups and government agencies committed to improving community health.

Our focus is health. The Foundation awards health-related programmatic grants to charitable organizations to implement evidence-based programs aimed at improving community health within Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Grant funding is used to support projects that:

• Are consistent with the Foundation’s goals, strategies and focus
• Demonstrate new and sustainable ways to solve health problems
• Illustrate the effectiveness of early intervention and preventive health

Funding Priority Areas

The Foundation awards grants in the area of health, defining health broadly to include social, behavioral and other dimensions beyond illness or disease. The Foundation focuses its grantmaking on four areas:

Chronic Disease

For more than a decade, the Foundation has funded chronic disease intervention and prevention programs for the most vulnerable populations in the region. By analyzing data from global, national, and statewide resources, the Foundation determines where it can make significant impact among populations by reducing the burden on both patients and health care providers.

One major example of the Foundation's leadership is its funding of community-based programs and services that have been created to reduce the effects of diabetes among minority populations. Through comprehensive, multilevel strategies, the Foundation has provided millions of dollars which grant these individuals easier access to diabetes prevention programs.

The Foundation has also supported national efforts—locally. For example, the Foundation was one of the first in the nation to fund an initiative known as Mission Lifeline. This is an initiative of the American Heart Association which advances the systems of care for patients who have experienced the most severe form of heart attack.

Data analysis of other chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis, certain types of cancer, asthma, and many others, are constantly being reviewed by the Foundation staff to determine significant impact opportunities with outcomes that are both measurable and achievable.

For five years, the Foundation's Highmark Healthy High 5 initiative focused on five areas that ultimately impacted family health: physical activity, nutrition, bullying, self-esteem and grieving. Many of the programs funded were not just aimed at children, but incorporated the entire family unit.

Childhood obesity and bullying remain major public health concerns for the nation and the region, and will remain critical issues for the Foundation. To that end, the Foundation is continuing to fund school and community-based programs that directly impact these issues and bring about positive change for children's physical and mental well-being.

The Foundation also funds programs in the area of maternal health, such as the doula pregnancy programs, walk-in clinics for uninsured and underinsured women, and parenting education classes. For the region's senior population, the Foundation funds programs that provide senior access to home health or palliative care, as well as routine health screenings and interventions.

Service Delivery Systems

Serving a diverse geographic area that encompasses urban and rural populations presents a unique set of challenges. However, despite the differences in these settings, gaining access to quality health care is a challenge for many individuals in both. In urban settings, there is a lack of health care providers, but the underinsured or uninsured often lack the resources to gain access. In rural settings, the situation is even worse. There are very few health care providers available, and those that are available may not have the capacity to serve the underinsured or uninsured populations.

During the past decade, the Foundation has funded many programs across the region to help underserved and uninsured populations gain access to quality and, in some cases, free health care. This is most evident in the area of dental care and oral health, in which the Foundation, through a series of grants, allowed more patients to gain access to quality dental care.

The Foundation has also provided grants to help organizations hire and recruit health care professionals. It has funded millions of dollars in grants to address the nursing shortage in Pennsylvania. In fact, approximately 5,000 nursing students, nurses, medical students, residents, first responders and nursing faculty have benefited from Foundation funding.

Finally, the Foundation has provided grants to organizations planning to invest in new capital and technologies that will better serve their local population. By providing funding for capital expenditures at locations such as Federally Qualified Health Clinics (FQHC), nonprofit organizations, and community hospitals, the Foundation allows these facilities the ability to serve more patients.

The John S. Dunn Foundation was formed in 1977 by John S. Dunn, a highly successful Houston business leader, who used much of his personal wealth to improve the quality of life in the city he called home for 65 years. Our Approach

The Foundation's Healthy Aging Program primarily funds patient-based and social service activities that directly help the older adults of New York City. We will consider funding high quality, direct service providers who:

• Increase/enhance access and availability of support, care or services especially for those with acute or chronic illness and those requiring palliative care.
• Create positive, measurable changes in quality.
• Demonstrate more cost-effective ways of delivering needed services.
• Develop programs and provide services to those who are traditionally underserved, such as immigrant and economically disadvantaged older adults.
• Increase the availability and quality of programs that allow us to remain in our homes and delay the need for long-term institutional care.
• Improve the quality-of-life of older adults who are residents of long-term care facilities.
• Improve the way professionals (physicians, nurses, social workers) and paraprofessionals (nursing aides) care for older adults and help to increase the number of professionals and paraprofessionals who care for us as New Yorkers live longer and healthier lives.

Programs supported by the Foundation must meet a demonstrable need of New York City's aging population. They must be designed to deliver services or alter the behavior of either providers or consumers. They should meet current needs or lay the groundwork to meet future needs and must have the potential to become sustainable and self-sufficient without further funding from the Samuels Foundation. The Foundation is particularly concerned with the availability and quality of healthcare received by the elderly. Faced with the realization that the number of elderly people is growing, the Foundation is committed to using its grant funds to work toward changing the system for the better.

Priorities

We give priority to programs that will remain in place and grow once our funding has ended. Therefore, we are looking to fund programs that are sustainable in the following ways:

• ​The program continues to generate revenue, which supports the continued provision of services to older adults.
• The program is or will be eligible for, and takes advantage of reimbursement mechanisms either from insurance programs or federal, state or local entitlement programs.
• The program will reduce the overall costs of delivering direct services. These savings will enable the organization or institution to continue the program after the grant term.
• The program will continue with other grants or funding, and there is evidence that the organization has a track record of strong, continuing and reliable funding streams.

The health and well-being of children and their families is the primary focus of Just Born’s corporate giving program. We make grants in these areas:

Community Building and Development – Just Born Quality Confections believes that behind every successful business is a strong community. We support causes that encourage community collaboration and improve the general well-being of our community. Programs supported by Community Building grants should invest in people by increasing skills, knowledge, abilities or well-being, and strengthen community resources.

• Opportunities for young adults with disabilities who are transitioning from a school environment into the workplace

• Financial coaching programs to help participants decrease debt, increase savings, and set long-term financial goals.

Environmental, Conservation, and Sustainability – Just Born Quality Confections invests in initiatives that foster sustainable communities. This includes projects that protect threatened ecosystems, preserve the health of our planet, and promote environmental education.

Programs supported by our Environmental, Conservation & Sustainability grants include, but are not limited to:

• Programs to protect and restore our waterways and preserve land
• Opportunities for children to participate in nature-based programming
• Environmental education initiatives

The Washington Home Grant

The Washington Home is committed to funding entities that create and deliver innovative, compassionate, and well-managed programs to improve the quality of life for older adults and/or terminally ill residents in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Priority Areas

The Foundation funds programs and projects that support older adults in five priority areas: caregiver relief, critically ill, food insecurity, social isolation, and sponsorship/memberships.

Caregivers provide important support to care recipients who are aging in place or facing a critical illness (cancer, dementia, etc.). Caregivers can include both family members and professionals such as certified nursing assistants and home health aides. The Foundation supports projects that focus on the needs of both the caregiver and their care recipient. Examples of programs and projects funded for caregiver relief include: providing home health aides/ certified nursing assistants (CNAs) for supplemental support, training and education for professional caregivers, caregiver support groups, program equipment, art supplies, and field trips for participants of adult daycare centers.

People who are critically ill face life-threatening conditions that can lead to physical impairments, cognitive impairments, and disabilities. Critical illness conditions can run the gamut from cancer and heart disease to dementia and stroke. The Foundation supports programs and projects that focus on the provision of direct care services, improving health outcomes for older adults, end-of-life care, and building the workforce needed to care for older adults. Examples of programs and projects funded include: startup costs for the first Geriatric Career Builders’ Apprenticeship Program in Washington, D.C., hospice and palliative care fellowships, nursing scholarships, hospice care and resources, cancer patient support-funds, end-of-life education and awareness, and a geriatric surgery pilot program.

This condition affects thousands of older adults throughout Washington, D.C., and millions more nationwide. The Foundation supports programs and projects that focus on increasing access to food as well as improving the quality of food available to older adults. Examples of programs and projects funded include: delivering meals to homebound older adults, expanding the distribution capacity of food programs, increasing access to fresh produce, sharing nutrition education, and providing community-based cooking demonstrations.

This condition is defined by a lack of relationships with others and having little-tono social support or contact. The Foundation supports virtual and in-person programs that focus on reducing social isolation among older adults through recreational activities involving the arts, physical activity, technology, and more. Examples of projects funded include: swimming programs for older adults, senior wellness center activities and equipment, volunteering, and technology training/support.

While not direct care, this support is vital for organizations to help nurture stability and expansion of programs. The Foundation provides a limited number of sponsorships and memberships for eligible organizations.

T.L.L. Temple Foundation

The T.L.L. Temple Foundation works alongside rural communities to build a thriving East Texas and to alleviate poverty, creating access and opportunities for all.

Focus Areas

In support of its mission to build a thriving Deep East Texas and to alleviate poverty, the foundation makes grants in the areas of education, economic development and community revitalization, health, human services, arts and culture, and conservation and the environment. Central to the foundation’s work is the aim of breaking the cycle of poverty, and the foundation prioritizes support for residents and communities that most lack access to opportunities they need to succeed

Health

America’s Health Rankings, an independent health measure that combines more than 30 health-related metrics, ranks Texas 34th out of 50 states in resident health. Texans show comparatively high rates of obesity, physical inactivity, and diabetes. Disparities in health status–by race and ethnicity, geography and income–are also higher in Texas than in many states: Texas ranks 44th in the prevalence of health disparities in the nation.

Access to health care providers is also a challenge in Texas, particularly in rural areas of the state. This is partly a function of insurance coverage. According to the U.S. Census, Texas has the highest rate of uninsured residents in the nation: in 2016, 17.1% of Texas residents do not have health insurance coverage, compared to 9.4% nationally. It ranks second in lack of health insurance coverage for children: 9.5% of children in Texas have no health insurance, compared to 4.8% nationally. In our region, insured rates are even lower: in 2014, 21.3% of residents had no health insurance coverage, compared to 19.1% for the state in 2014. 

Given these challenges, our goal is simple: to improve the health of residents of Deep East Texas. The barriers of poverty, geographic isolation, and a lack of access to health care services make it particularly difficult for many residents in our region to improve and maintain their health. Yet poor health status often limits residents’ ability to get a high quality education, hold down a sustaining job, and stay out of poverty.

Education

Educational attainment is a significant challenge in our region. Based on U.S. Census data, Texas ranks 49th out of the 50 states for having the lowest percentage of adults with a high school diploma, with 18.5% of people 25 and older not having earned a high school degree or equivalent. According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board the problem is even more pronounced in our region. In the most recent 8th grade cohort available, there were 24,639 students in upper and southeast Texas counties we serve. Five years later, only 72.0% completed high school, meaning that almost 7,000 young people did not complete the most basic education.

The counties in our region lag even further behind when it comes to college completion: according to the U.S. Census’s 2015 American Community Survey, only 14.0% of people 25 and older have a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 27.1% in Texas and 29.3% nationally. This is particularly problematic considering that many of the region’s fastest growing occupations require at least an associate’s degree, if not a four-year degree. 

Education has always been a top priority for the T.L.L. Temple Foundation because it is the most effective tool to break the cycle of poverty and build a thriving region. Addressing the region’s low rates of educational attainment—particularly for low-income students—is critical to improving outcomes in poverty, health and economic development. We aim to increase access to high quality educational opportunities for residents in Deep East Texas. We invest in programs that measurably improve education outcomes in the region, including: early childhood education, out-of-school-time programs, and programs dedicated to increasing postsecondary preparation, access and success. We also support efforts to ensure that Deep East Texans have the skills needed to obtain and retain high quality jobs.

Economic Development and Community Revitalization

The 24 counties in our service region have very high rates of unemployment: according to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2016, 52.9% of the population 16 and older was in the labor force, compared to 64.4% in Texas and 63.5% nationally. In the Deep East Texas Workforce Development Area, the unemployment rate was 7% in 2016. While this decreased from 10% in 2011, it is significantly higher than the state unemployment rate of 4.7% and the national unemployment rate of 4.9% during the same period.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, between 2012 and 2022, jobs are expected to increase by 13.1% in the Deep East Texas Workforce Development Area, compared to 21.3% for Texas, and 10.8% for the U.S. The fastest growing occupations correspond to the region’s aging population: home health and personal care aides, nursing, medical secretaries, and medical assistants. Most of these jobs require a two or four-year degree. 

We aim to improve economic opportunities and help develop and sustain thriving communities in the most economically challenged places in our service area. Vibrant communities and a robust regional economy are central to creating and sustaining a thriving Deep East Texas. We invest in efforts to transform disinvested communities into places with economic opportunities and equitable access to the essential community resources needed to help families thrive. Impact Lufkin, a foundation-initiated program, is an example of the foundation’s approach to holistic, resident-engaged community revitalization. Because engaged citizens are central to fostering strong communities, we also fund programs to increase civic participation. Finally, we invest in programs that strengthen the regional economy and improve economic opportunities for residents of Deep East Texas.

Human Services

Too many residents of Deep East Texas live in poverty. According to the U.S. Census, in 2015 in the 24 counties that we serve, 19.3% of residents live in poverty, compared to 15.9% of Texans and 13.5% of people in the U.S. The median household income (2010-2014) is 21% lower than the state of Texas, and 22% lower than the U.S. For these residents, poverty can become a vicious cycle, limiting access to the quality education, self-sustaining employment, and health care needed to rise above poverty.

The foundation works to ensure the most vulnerable residents in our service region have their basic needs met. By helping provide access to food, shelter, social services and other programs, we strive to make sure that there is a strong safety net to support the region’s low-income and vulnerable residents.

Arts and Culture

Arts and culture are critical for healthy communities and a thriving region. The foundation has long supported efforts to celebrate the region’s cultural heritage and document its important history. We will continue to help enrich the lives of Deep East Texans by investing in programs that provide access to artistic and cultural experiences.

Conservation and the Environment

Beginning with the first timber harvested in the second half of the nineteenth century, the Temple family has had a special bond with the forests, wetlands, and open spaces across our region. We believe that the health of our natural environment is closely connected to the health of our residents, our communities, and our region and so seek to protect our important natural resources.

The primary emphasis of the foundation’s conservation and environmental efforts is the Boggy Slough Conservation Area  - a Temple Foundation-managed program.

The aim of the Boggy Slough Conservation Area is to:

• serve as a model for conservation and land management;
• serve as a catalyst for creating a stewardship ethic and connection to nature in our communities; and
• bridge critical research gaps regarding the forest and bottomland ecosystems of the Neches River basin and the Southeast.

The foundation awards funding for multiple purposes, including: general operating support, project support, capital improvements, and organizational development and capacity building.

The size and duration of grants is matched to the applicant’s scale of impact, need, capabilities and opportunities, and typically follow these guidelines:

• We rarely make grants that exceed 30% of a project or organizational budget

Community Support Grants - Key Information

Applicants should describe their request for funding of projects, program support, and/or capacity building within this context:

“Projects” are discrete initiatives designed to achieve a specific, identified goal during the funding period. Funding can be requested to develop, launch, or augment solutions that respond to a need or eliminate barriers to participation.

"Program support” funds the activities and services provided by organizations that serve the community. Funding may be requested to support or improve participation by persons with SCI. Priority is given to programs that have broad impact, affect people across the lifespan, demonstrate community partnerships and/or empower people with SCI by providing options and opportunities to achieve greater independence.

“Capacity building” supports an organization’s effectiveness, operations, and potential for long-term sustainability. Funding may be requested for specified needs such as equipment, alterations that promote access, strategic and/or collaborative planning efforts, staff training, and professional development. These funds are for established organizations and not intended to subsidize start-up costs.

• Arts, Sports and Recreation: e.g., community partnership initiatives, visual and performing arts programs, equipment, travel funds, event support, or wellness programs.

Aging Population

Meeting the physical and emotional needs of the elderly, especially efforts to preserve and promote the independence, health, and quality of life of seniors; to improve the quality and availability of both nursing home care and alternatives to nursing home care; and to protect seniors from abuse or financial exploitation.

Arts, Culture, And History

Supporting artistic, historical, or cultural experiences that enhance learning in school-age children, or extend the benefit of the arts to children, the elderly, and others who might not otherwise have access. 

Children And Youth

Meeting the physical and emotional needs of young people, especially efforts to prevent child abuse or neglect or mitigate their effects; to provide healthcare; and to promote and to develop sound character and values in young people.

Economically Disadvantaged

Moving low-income people toward economic independence; providing emergency shelter and assistance; providing healthcare; offering transitional housing and supportive services to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness; and promoting the creation of affordable housing. 

Education

Preparing young children for school; supporting the educational process broadly through means such as parental involvement and teacher training; promoting adult literacy; improving English-language skills in both children and adults; and supporting student-focused programs at the college level that advance other areas of the Foundation’s mission.

Nonprofit Capacity

Building the infrastructure of agencies working in aging, arts, children, economically disadvantaged, or education.

McGregor Foundation Grant

The McGregor Foundation, established in 2002 as a private grantmaking foundation, evolved from a history of more than 125 years of providing distinguished care for seniors at the A. M. McGregor Home in East Cleveland and the Amasa Stone House in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland.

Tootie McGregor Terry founded The A.M. McGregor Home (McGregor) in 1904 in honor of her late husband, Ambrose, as a rest home for “gentlewomen who could no longer care for themselves.” Ambrose McGregor, a close associate of John D. Rockefeller, had served as president of Standard Oil of Ohio. In establishing the organization, Mrs. Terry donated the land owned by the McGregor family that now anchors the organization’s 32-acre East Cleveland campus and funded construction of the first Home. She also created a generous endowment to ensure continued longevity and success.

In 1987, The A.M. McGregor Home merged with another distinguished long-term facility, the Amasa Stone House, established by Mr. and Mrs. Amasa B. Stone in 1877. In February of 2004, the residents and staff of the McGregor Home and the Amasa Stone House finally came together in a beautiful new nursing facility on the McGregor campus, The Gardens of McGregor & Amasa Stone.

In 1999, the McGregor Board of Directors adopted a new strategic direction for the organization to specifically focus on “supporting seniors in need and those who serve them.” The McGregor Foundation, with a separate Board and endowment, carries McGregor’s mission to all of Cuyahoga County beyond the organization’s East Cleveland campus. In addition, The A.M. McGregor Home will continue to own and operate senior housing and care facilities appropriate to the needs and means of the communities that they serve.

Grant Guidelines and Funding Parameters

For 2020 through 2024, Stevens Square Foundation will continue to focus its granting on programs in the 7-county metro area — Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington. These services must be targeted at seniors who are financially vulnerable and have other demonstrable needs. (Grants typically range from $10,000 to $30,000.)

We support two types of programs:

• Existing programs that enable seniors to remain in their own homes
• (homes may include a variety of living arrangements, but not long-term care facilities, including nursing homes and assisted living facilities)
• New programs for:
• Planning: to develop innovative (new) projects or programs that improve the lives of older adults
• Implementation: to pilot or to carry out innovative new programs and projects or substantially expand existing programs that significantly improve the lives of older adults

The Foundation accepts applications for one year of funding. It is possible for organizations to apply for and receive funding for up to three consecutive years. After three consecutive years of funding, organizations must take one year off before reapplying for further support.

About Mini-Grants

We award Mini-Grants for individual readings ($150 to $450 per session) and/or workshops ($200 to $300 per session) that may or may not be part of a larger reading series or festival. Mini-grants are paid by P&W directly to the individual writer. The entity organizing or hosting the event must act as the lead sponsor and must submit an application for support. As part of the application, please be prepared to provide the name of the participating writer, proposed event date(s), and amount requested, per the ranges listed above. 

New York State and California organizations that sponsor readings and workshops may apply for Mini-Grants to pay writers for their participation. All grants are paid by P&W directly to the writer. Due to a mandate from our funders, grants for events outside of New York City (i.e. New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx, and Richmond counties) are restricted to writers who are New York State residents; there is no restriction in California.

If a grant is awarded, payments are sent directly to the writer approximately two to four weeks after the event. To support as many literary events as possible, we generally grant no more than $3,000 to organizations during our fiscal year (July 1 to June 30), and across all grant opportunities; in California, the annual cap per organization per year is $1,500.

Decisions on maximum grant amounts are based on the availability of funds and are made at the discretion of Poets & Writers. These caps fluctuate depending on the availability of funds in each jurisdiction and the number of applications we receive.

Organizations are strongly encouraged to match P&W’s payment to the writer. However, if an organization is not able to match or add to the writer’s fee, we will still consider the application.

Funding Priorities

As part of our belief that literature is vital to sustaining a vibrant culture and our mission to help create an environment in which literature can be appreciated by the widest possible public, priority is given to organizations that:

• serve a culturally diverse audience
• feature culturally diverse writers
• feature writers who have not previously presented at that venue
• present programs in rural or other underserved areas
• have not previously received R&W support (If an organization has received R&W funding in the past, we consider whether it has followed the grant guidelines and returned reports in a timely manner.)
• are able to match R&W's payment to the writer (not including in-kind contributions such as meals, lodging, and travel)
• have a publicity and marketing plan to draw audience, and a track record of attracting audiences to past events.

About our Grant Making

Ninety-nine girlfriends makes annual grants, called Impact Awards, in the Portland Metro/SW Washington region from a pool of money contributed by our members. Impact awards range from $50,000-$100,000 each year, depending on that year’s pool.

We fund equally in four focus areas, selecting nonprofits whose work is aligned with our vision of a more equitable future for all and our values of strength in diversity, collective action, and community impact.

Letters of Interest are due in early April. Then, we use our internal processes to select the ones that are most aligned with our vision and values. These organizations are invited to submit applications. During this time, our member-volunteer teams are learning about implicit bias, equity and inclusion, Trust-Based Philanthropy, and consensus building. 

Guiding Principles

In addition to our eligibility criteria, we apply the following principles and trust-based philanthropy to guide decision-making on grant applications.

Equity - Grant making must be grounded in equity.

Trust - We believe the organizations that apply for our grants are the experts in their field. We will lead with trust, respect, humility and curiosity.

Learning - At our heart, we are a learning organization. We value new approaches as much as experience, we recognize our missteps as learning opportunities, and we learn best together. 

Responsiveness and Transformative Impact - We fund organizations that respond to a critical need and/or are working to address the root causes of systemic issues.

Initiative and risk-taking - We believe that taking risks and exploring new ideas can lead to innovative solutions to complex societal problems.  

We engage women in a collaborative learning environment of inclusiveness and mutual respect, incorporating our collective voices, perspectives, talents, and skills. We educate ourselves about implicit bias, equitable grant making, and consensus-building, and we are embedding racial equity in our work. Each year is a new year of grantmaking at ninety-nine girlfriends. Community context changes as do our members, our grant review teams, and our annual Funding Priority. In the end, what we fund is determined by the votes of our members. 

Focus Areas

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to our work. Our vision is a more equitable community for all, therefore we prioritize funding that supports communities that are historically and/or currently underserved with respect to socioeconomic status, race, identity, or ability.

We seek to fund organizations working to improve educational equity, opportunity, or education-related services for children and youth from pre-K through high school in the areas of:

• Early childhood education and development
• Out-of-school time and summer learning
• Programs that work to close achievement and opportunity gaps
• Career and/or college readiness tools and skills for high school students
• Arts education, cultural education, and creative expression

We seek to fund organizations working to ensure everyone has equal access to resources and safe spaces, across environmental issues in the areas of:

• Access to environmental resources - healthy food, homes, water and green space
• Countering environmental burdens - pollution in air, water, and land
• Providing educational resources around sustainability and climate change preparedness
• Advancing participation in the green workforce
• Promoting systems change that includes meaningful and inclusive participation in the environmental decision-making process, that promotes environmental justice and equitable environmental policies

We seek to fund organizations delivering trauma-informed services that focus on housing solutions and home stability for families, youth, and adults in the areas of:

• Prevention of homelessness and helping people stabilize and keep their housing
• Emergency, temporary, and transitional housing and shelters
• Housing placement
• Resources and support that help prevent adverse childhood experiences or provide healing resources for families experiencing housing/home instability
• Wrap-around services that strengthen housing/home stability including mental and physical health services, recovery support, and domestic violence advocacy

We seek to fund organizations that advance the economic security and financial well-being of women by removing barriers to work in the areas of:

• Job readiness - including skills training, trades, and education
• Adult literacy and language proficiency
• Financial literacy
• College and post-secondary success
• Accessibility to affordable and reliable childcare
• Accessibility to safe and affordable healthcare including physical, mental, dental, and reproductive health

Ninety-nine girlfriends recognizes the complexities of gender identity and gender expression, and welcome cisgender women, transgender women, and gender non-binary, gender non-conforming, or gender queer persons.

Use of Funds

Funds may be used for general operating or project support to advance your mission. Awardees may choose to have funds disbursed in one payment in 2024, or in two payments: one in 2024 and one in 2025. 

Background

Many young people in the United States today face challenges to financial stability that prior generations did not. A crucial condition for investing in oneself, gaining economic mobility and actively building wealth is the opportunity to earn steady, livable wages. MIT’s Living Wage Calculator shows that a living wage in 2024 for a single adult, no children, working full time in San Diego County is $29.52. The cost of living in San Diego makes attracting skilled talent from other places in the country difficult, and more likely that our youth will leave home.

The local employment projections over the next ten years for San Diego shows a 19% growth in construction, healthcare and social assistance, and a 14% increase in trades. There are and will be thousands of jobs that provide a livable wage and do not require an advanced degree. Ensuring youth have agency in their career path and options that are accessible is essential to a strong, diverse workforce.

We know that San Diego has increased the number of skilled workers by 25% each year since 2016 but the growth rate is not enough for the labor demand and access to secondary education, training, paid internships and/​or apprenticeships is not equitable. Students of color represent 70% of the K‑12 population, yet this diversity is not reflected in all workforce industries in demand.

The foundation’s strategic plan focuses on workforce development as a priority within all core areas of the foundation’s granting pillars: Health and Medical Research, Arts, and Youth Success.

Goals

The long-term goals of the foundation for Youth Success are that:

• Youth furthest from opportunity experience robust career progression
• The San Diego workforce is resilient, skilled and qualified

This initiative supports career paths that help young adults earn steady, livable wages in San Diego. It focuses on industries that align with our funding priorities, labor demand, and our goal of ensuring young people can live and thrive in San Diego County.

The goals of this initiative are that San Diego youth have:

• Increased access to high-quality internship/​apprenticeship programs that provide education/ training, supportive services, and pathways to productive careers with steady, living wages.
• Increased earning potential and career mobility while pursuing education and/​or careers

To achieve the above goals for youth in San Diego, the workforce ecosystem will need:

• Capacity for delivery of career pathway programs such as, the ability to expand program and/ or internship hours, offer additional seat availability, and reduce barriers to program completion such as financial, transportation, childcare and mental health.
• Increased coordination and collaboration across sectors to reduce the disconnect between learning environments, employers and the needs of young people going into and in the workforce.

Our efforts will focus on two paths to livable wages:

• Access to paid internships/​apprenticeships with mentorship for underrepresented communities within the workforce
• Opportunities for increased earning potential for young adults already in the workforce through additional education, certifications, leadership/​professional development and trade courses etc.

• Programs that provide access to extended and meaningful internships/​apprenticeships in specific industries that lead to living wages for opportunity and overburdened youth.
• Programs that reduce barriers, such as financial ability, transportation, childcare, family support etc., to access and complete, education/​certifications/​credentials or internships/ apprenticeships.
• Programs that include strong career guidance and support such as personal development, networking events, leadership development, mental wellbeing, etc.

History

The Mary Thompson Home for Old Ladies was founded in 1876 by Mrs. David Thompson and a group of 31 philanthropic Detroit area women. Its purpose was to provide a home for ladies 60 or older – a residence for their “golden years.” The building, designed by George Mason and built in 1884, still stands at the corner of Hancock and Cass Avenue. It had 40 rooms and was able to house 31 residents, who were able to furnish their own rooms for their comfort. There was an infirmary, and common sitting rooms on each floor. Annual expenses per resident were about $1500. The Home was also supported by an endowment fund and donations.

Activities were arranged, such as travel talks, musical programs, hymn singing, and religious services. Meals were provided and residents could invite guests. Funeral expenses of residents were paid by the Home.

The Board of Trustees and the staff made great efforts to make the Thompson Home a warm and secure place for the ladies who resided there, and worked to provide a homelike, non-institutional environment. A past President wrote, “Let us try to make this home a place where love, beauty, and joy will abide always, and where our ladies may live their lives comfortably, with pride and dignity.”

In the 1970s, the Board decided to close the doors of the Home, and the remaining residents moved to other senior communities in the Detroit area. The building was donated to Wayne State University, and the present-day Mary Thompson Foundation was created in 1979. Today the Foundation’s purpose is to provide aid, assistance and services to the elderly through funding.

Our Mission

The Mary Thompson Foundation is an organization consisting of a Board of Trustees which allocates small grants to other organizations in need. We abide by our Mission Statement which states that we provide aid and assistance to the elderly through our funding, mostly throughout the Michigan area.

Impact

Over the years, the Mary Thompson Foundation has donated many different types of grants to organizations, all of which benefit our senior communities in several diverse ways.

Some of these include: 

• Medical (hospital programs, nursing care, etc.) 
• Church programs, libraries, universities, centers, cemeteries, etc.
• Entertainment (music, theaters, symphonies, etc.)
• Food programs and transportation
• Animals (comfort/companionship to seniors)
• Accounting aids

At CareQuest Institute for Oral Health®, we work together to create a system that is accessible, equitable, and integrated by bringing forth ideas and solutions. We do this through our work in grantmaking, research, health improvement programs, policy and advocacy, and education, as well as our leadership in dental benefits and innovation advancements. But we don’t do it alone. Collaboration and partnership are key to achieving our mission — to improve the oral health of all. 

Our grantmaking team has a history of partnering with grassroots and communitybased organizations that represent and/or engage those most directly impacted by oral health inequities. These populations include racial and ethnic minorities, rural communities, and older adults. Since our Grassroots Engagement Initiative in 2015–2020, we’ve continued to elevate new partner voices to reshape, disrupt, and transform our oral health system. Taking what we’ve learned, we are seeking new voices representing historically marginalized communities to advance oral health.

School-Based and School-Linked Initiatives to Improve Oral Health

As part of CareQuest Institute’s philanthropic strategy, we are actively seeking grantmaking opportunities that strengthen communities and improve the overall system to create better oral health for all. School-based and school-linked oral health programs are designed to address access barriers for high-risk children to prevent dental decay and improve overall health and academic success. Through the SchoolBased and School-Linked Initiatives to Improve Oral Health Request for Proposals (RFP), CareQuest Institute is seeking to fund projects that are engaging schools to address systemic barriers to oral health, inclusive of access, for children and their families. 

Proposals may include but are not limited to:

• Workforce considerations. Exploring effective studentfacing roles (e.g., school nurses) and strategies individuals in these roles use to support the expansion of oral health prevention, messaging, and access to care for students. Schools can become the center for multiple opportunities to improve the oral health and overall health of the students, increasing their chances to stay in school and achieve in life.
• Community Engagement. Advocacy by community members to support policy to implement or expand school-based or school-linked oral health programs.
• Policy solutions to improve oral health. Local education agency, state, or national policies to support school-based or school-linked oral health programs.
• Expansion of the capacity of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). School-based oral health programs may either be operated by or partner with FQHCs to refer students and their family members, so that everyone eventually secures a dental home.
• School-based technology and tools. Teledentistry can enable children to receive diagnostic, preventive, and early intervention dental care at their school.
• Alternative payment models. A clinical organization piloting innovative clinical, workforce, and workflow solutions to inform and/or validate creative payment models that support school-based or school-linked oral health.

Annunziata Sanguinetti Foundation Grant

To support the care, treatment, cure, rehabilitation, or education of children with physical handicaps, mental retardation or mental illnesses to children born in, residing in, or whose parents’ homes were maintained in San Francisco, California.

• The care, treatment, cure, education or rehabilitation of deaf, dumb or blind children, or physically handicapped or mentally retarded children,
• Furnishing medical, dental, nursing, hospitalization or psychiatric care or treatment for physically or mentally handicapped children,
• To any other charity recognized as aforesaid furnishing aid, care, education or assistance to children.

Cross-Sector Impact Grants

South Arts’ mission is advancing Southern vitality through the arts, and this program addresses a strategic goal to cultivate and strengthen deep, cross-sector partnerships that are artist and community centered. As our communities continue to change, the arts play an incomparable role in addressing many of our communal and individual challenges and strengths. The value of partnership and working together across sectors brings new opportunities, increased effectiveness, and greater depth to our collective work. Through this program, South Arts seeks to provide significant support to projects developed by partners that harness the power of “Arts & …” (these are projects at the intersection of arts and other sectors). This year, we are shifting to a new program model.

Over the next three years, South Arts is committed to one community impact area – Health and Wellness. Eligible projects must focus on the “Arts & Health and Wellness” theme - for example, arts & mental wellness or arts & physical health. Matching grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to support approximately 18 projects. We anticipate funding these 18 projects for three grant cycles and expect applicants to commit to the collaborative work for a three-year duration. Funding will be awarded in three separate fiscal years with streamlined, grant renewal forms submitted for cycles two and three. Matching grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to continue or advance the project with the same two partners in cycles two and three.  

South Arts’ mission is advancing Southern vitality through the arts. This program addresses two of South Arts’ strategic goals:

• Connect artists and arts professionals in the South to resources that will increase opportunities for success within and outside the region
• Advance impactful arts-based programs that recognize and address trends and evolving needs of a wide range of communities in the South

Project Requirements

SSouth Arts welcomes applications from partnering entities working together on a project that addresses Arts & Health and Wellness through cross-sector partnerships. Projects must utilize the arts as a tool in creative approaches to address and advance a health and wellness issue that is of importance in their community. Projects should also establish or advance relationships across at least two different sectors, one being in the arts. 

Arts disciplines may include, but are not limited to:

• Performing arts, including dance, music, theater, musical theater, opera;
• Literary arts, including fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry;
• Visual arts, including craft, drawing, experimental, painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media;
• Film or media;
• Traditional and folk arts, including music, craft, storytelling, dance; or
• Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary artforms.

Community impact areas may include, but are not limited to:

• Physical (overall well-being and the ability of the body to function properly);
• Mental/Emotional (overall well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life and their emotions);
• Social (overall well-being that stems from connection and community); or
• Occupational (overall physical, mental, and social well-being of workers). 

Matching Requirements

The minimum grant request is $5,000 and the maximum request is $15,000 (subject to funding availability). A match of at least 1:2 is required; meaning for each grant dollar, the grantee must provide $.50 towards the project expenses. For returning grantees, in cycles two and three, the maximum request is $10,000 (subject to funding availability).

Up to half of the match may be comprised of in-kind contributions such as donated materials, donated services, or other contributed non-cash assets or staff time diverted to this project. At least half of the match must be cash. For staff time diverted to this project, up to 10% of the total project expenses, but no more than $5,000 can be included as a cash expense or cash match for staff time. The remaining staff time must be an in-kind contribution. Contracted individuals and services specifically for this project are eligible cash expenses. 

As in recent years, this year’s priorities have been established after careful analysis and review of information provided by nonprofit leaders in our community. The following is a list of priorities that should be referenced by all applicants as they prepare their proposals for funding.

Current Priorities

Mental Health services

The Chest supports mental health services for people in our services area of all ages, with priority given to children and adolescents.

Food Insecurity and Healthy Eating

The Chest provides financial support and programming for local residents who are experiencing food insecurity and support for programs teaching people about eating healthy to address such health issues as diabetes or obesity.

Home Care (Health Care Staffing and Services)

Services provided in the home for elderly or disabled people, on an hourly basis, ranging from companionship to physical care not requiring a nursing degree

Educational Enhancement/College and Career Prep

Students of ages, from low income families, who are academically motivated often need support for educational and enrichment expenses. This includes participating in college prep classes, attending enrichment programs, payment for tutorial services, or expenses such as books, meals or appropriate clothing.

Racial Justice Education

The Community Chest plays a leadership role in the Coalition for Racial Unity and Equity (CRUE), a group formed by local professionals following the slaying of George Floyd. Through providing educational and advocacy opportunities in the community people are provided information about equity and justice. Sponsored activities include multiracial/multiethnic dinners where discussions are held that sensitize participants to topics on race relations. Other activities such as library displays offer participants learning materials about equity through reading and viewing materials. The Chest provides financial support for these activities.     

About the Quality of Life Grants Program

The Quality of Life Grants Program, created by the late Dana Reeve, strives to help individuals with disabilities and their families by providing grants to nonprofit organizations that improve quality of life through access, independence, opportunities for community engagement, and other life-enhancing endeavors.

The Priority Impact Grant Tiers offer three increasing levels of grant funding. Priority Impact grants fund priority issues for individuals living with paralysis. Grantee organizations will demonstrate capacity to implement the grant without intensive technical assistance and capacity building, as well as demonstrate capacity for program development, evaluation and sustainability.

Tier 4- Grants must be completed within 24 months

• Grants of up to $50,000.

• Nursing Home Transition

Employment 

Priority Impact grants are one of Reeve’s top priorities because employment is fundamental in achieving and maintaining independence, while being one of the most challenging obstacles to individuals living with paralysis. In addition, gainful employment allows people living with paralysis to achieve enhanced financial security, higher quality of life, and improved community connections.

Grant funds support programs and projects that:

• Assist individuals living with paralysis to enter, re-enter, remain, and advance in the workplace;
• Create career pathways to meaningful, living wage jobs; and
• Provide job development services to people living with paralysis, including career education, adaptive technology and career training with the goal of finding gainful employment.
• Grants funds may not provide stipends and funds may not be given directly to workers or program participants as salaries or other incentives.

Nursing Home Transition 

Funds support Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and other organizations that provide transition services across the country to transition people with paralysis living in nursing home back into their homes or a community-based setting of their choice. Funds also support projects focused on diversion (keeping people living with paralysis who are at-risk from entering a nursing).
