Established in 1974 as a nonprofit U.S. Regional Arts Organization (USRAO), Creative West was founded on the belief that place matters to the creative process. Fifty years later, communities of place, practice, experience, and identity remain fundamental to our work, framing our understanding of how culture is creatively produced and collectively experienced.

National Arts Futures Fellowship

The National Arts Futures Fellowship (NAFF) is a six-month virtual leadership development program rooted in democracy, wellness, and belonging. It calls on early and mid-career arts and culture professionals from all backgrounds to step into their power as civic leaders and cultural innovators—building the skills, networks, and vision needed to shape a future where creativity drives justice, care, and connection.

Fellows join a national network committed to strengthening public life, nurturing collective wellness, and fostering deep belonging across communities. Together, they learn, experiment, and act—advancing a shared vision of leadership that is sustainable, community-rooted, and future-focused.

Each fellow enters NAFF with a Personal Action Project (PAP)—a concrete idea they will develop and implement with support from peers, coaches, guest experts, and flexible seed funding of $250–$1,000. Projects may include launching a cultural initiative, organizing a community campaign, supporting artist-led advocacy, seeking a public leadership role, or piloting another form of civic or community action. Throughout the fellowship, each project evolves through coaching, peer feedback, strategy sessions, and real-world experimentation. Fellows conclude the program by sharing their project, leadership growth, and next steps at the National Fellows Summit.

What’s New in Cohort Two?

• Cohort Two expands NAFF from six to seven monthly sessions and adds two new elements that support fellows in moving their Personal Action Projects from development into implementation:
• Seed Funding: Fellows may request $250–$1,000 in flexible funding to test, pilot, or implement their projects during the fellowship.
• Artists Thrive Framework: Fellows will use the framework to assess their work, identify opportunities for growth, and strengthen artist-led advocacy, collaboration, and community impact.

What kinds of projects are supported?

Examples: Running for office, launching cultural programs, organizing campaigns, supporting policies. Projects can be local, regional, or national in scope.

Nonprofit organizations in Idaho working on education, homelessness, civic education, environmental conservation, wildlife, or animal welfare may be eligible for grants that support their programs and services. Grants from Cross Charitable Foundation also serve Utah, Montana, and Wyoming and are by board invitation only, with one application accepted per organization each calendar year.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations in Idaho and the broader Pacific Northwest can apply for Foster Foundation grants to support social services, education, medical research and care, and community engagement programs. Local governments partnering through eligible nonprofits on civic engagement or community initiatives may benefit when projects serve underserved children, women, seniors, and other disadvantaged residents.

Local government entities and other organizations in Idaho that run civic engagement, community service, or public benefit programs can seek AmeriCorps Formula support to place members in their initiatives. Local governments and other eligible entities in Idaho running civic engagement and education programs can apply for Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors’ Trust for Civic Life: Civic Experiment Grant; awards Up to US $25,000 for experimental, community-led initiatives. Rural-focused projects that spark inclusive civic participation and build long-lasting local civic infrastructure may be especially competitive.

Youth-led teams working on civic engagement and education projects in Idaho and nationwide can apply for the Carnegie Young Leaders for Civic Preparedness Fellowship, funded by Institute for Citizens & Scholars. Participants aged 14–24 receive up to US $4,500 total in stipends and project support to design and implement community change initiatives.

Idaho youth ages 5–25 planning civic engagement or community service projects can access funding through Youth Service America for Youth Service Month and Global Youth Service Day activities. Grants of US $250 - US $500 support youth-designed, youth-led projects that engage diverse peers as volunteers and build social awareness, relationships, and community connections across the U.S. and Canada.

Local government and other 501(c)(3) organizations in Idaho working on civic engagement and voter participation may be eligible for Park Foundation’s Civic Participation grants. Focused on strengthening democracy, the foundation supports year-round organizing to educate, motivate, and mobilize voters, protect voting rights and election integrity, and counter voter suppression efforts across the U.S.

Trust is the foundation of vibrant, resilient communities and healthy civic life. Across the country, local and national organizations are demonstrating the profound ways trust shapes our collective well-being—strengthening relationships between neighbors, cultivating confidence in institutions, and enabling people to work together to solve shared challenges. These efforts are often rooted in the knowledge and leadership of those closest to the work. 

The Trust in Practice Awards support non-profit organizations that are collaborating on new initiatives to build trust across local or virtual communities. Grantees will be part of a national network dedicated to fostering trust through the Alliance for Social Trust’s programs and storytelling platforms. Award recipients will also participate in the annual Trust in Practice Summit to celebrate the work of trust builders.
