About the Imagine Award

The Imagine Award by the Promise Fund offers $20,000 in flexible funding (see definition in FAQs) and a six-month cohort-based learning experience for community-rooted early childhood leaders with ideas for transformative impact. ​​Award recipients are at the idea stage and will launch a pilot within six months, testing their solutions with real users, gathering feedback, and refining their approach.

Imagine Award recipients will learn strategies for designing and executing lightweight tests for rapid learning while gaining clarity on their idea's direction using impact and business models. They will craft a compelling story about their work to build future partnerships and run a focused pilot with strong feedback loops for gathering data, all while growing alongside a supportive peer community.

A grant to assist with sustainability of quality nonprofit early education centers or qualified childcare homes in Northwest Kansas, the Dane G. NW Kansas CARES for Kids includes multiple grants designed to assist childcare centers and qualified family childcare homes (formerly group homes) in attracting and retaining staff, providing educational materials, and also helping to sustain existing slots and to provide more slots for Northwest Kansas children.

Early Childhood Education Staff Support Grants

Though they are charged with caring for our most precious assets, classroom helpers and teachers in the early childhood field are historically low-wage earners. The Early Childhood Education Staff Support Grant is designed to provide financial recognition for these important workers, reduce costs associated with staff turnover, and stabilize the workforce.

Originally piloted for 5 years, the grant has been enhanced and renewed for another 5 years.

Early Childhood Education Start-up or Expansion Grants

This grant is for the start up or expansion of licensed home-based, qualifying family childcare homes (formerly group homes), or childcare centers. 

To assist communities to start or expand quality nonprofit early education centers or group homes in Northwest Kansas. In certain situations, the Hansen Foundation can also work through governmental or qualified non-profit entities to assist in the start-up or sustainability of licensed childcare homes.

A quality childcare center should be more than a place where children are safe and fed. Science is clear about the critical importance of a child’s first three years of brain development. The early years are the platform from which all learning starts. 

This grant is designed to offer assistance to nonprofit childcare centers or family childcare homes (formerly group homes) with needs such as office equipment, outdoor space needs, curriculum, books, or other items.

UCS is part of United Way of Greater Kansas City’s Impact 100 and provides information, trends analysis and documentation to enhance community-wide planning and decision-making. By promoting upstream, proactive approaches, UCS supports sustainable solutions that improve the long-term well-being of the entire community.

Overview

The Human Service Fund (HSF) is a pool of general tax dollars from local municipalities and County government that invest their support in area non-profit agency programs that help avoid, defer, or reduce costs that would otherwise be incurred by city or County governments. UCS provides local governments with a structured accountable system through which non-profit agencies competitively apply for and access funds to serve Johnson County residents. 

Initiated by County Commissioners in 1980, cities joined the partnership in 1990. In 2026, $473,880 was awarded to 19 programs that promote self-sufficiency and build well-being for Johnson County residents. In 2025, HSF grantees provided over 243,000 units of service – including medical and dental appointments, nights of shelter, job training and more – to nearly 65,000 Johnson County residents. 

Human Service Fund (HSF) : Regular Grants

501(c)(3) applicants who are current HSF grantees or are new applicants with an annual budget greater than $400,000 or seeking a grant amount of $5,000 or up to $60,000 for specific program(s)/service(s) to be delivered in 2027 that meet HSF Funding Priorities.

The Human Service Fund (HSF) offers small grants aimed at 501(c)(3) organizations in Johnson County with annual budgets under $400,000. This initiative supports programs that enhance self-sufficiency and well-being among residents. In 2026, HSF allocated $473,880 to 19 programs, providing vital services to over 65,000 individuals. Eligible applicants can request up to $5,000 to develop specific services for 2027, fostering community resilience and addressing local needs.

SC Johnson Grants aim to enhance community welfare through charitable contributions, focusing on health, sustainability, and opportunity. Since 1937, the company has committed five percent of its pretax profits to support registered charities and nonprofit organizations, especially in areas where it operates. The grant program prioritizes initiatives addressing healthcare access, environmental conservation, and educational equity, ensuring that efforts align with the values of community service and corporate responsibility.

The Alleghany Foundation, a private 501(c)(3) organization in Virginia, focuses on enhancing the quality of life in the Alleghany Highlands through strategic funding initiatives. It seeks grant applications that address key areas such as economic transformation, educational excellence, health and wellness, community capacity, and civic leadership. By prioritizing innovative projects and supporting local organizations, the Foundation aims to foster sustainable growth and community engagement, ensuring a vibrant future for the region.

The Brinker International Charitable Giving Program focuses on giving back to communities through support for kids, hunger, and education. Organizations eligible for funding must be 501c(3) non-profits and submit requests at least six weeks prior to events. The program does not support individuals, political or religious organizations, or explicit discrimination policies. Funding is provided through monetary donations or in-kind contributions like dining certificates.

The Charles E. Carey Memorial Fund Grant, managed by the Hutchinson Community Foundation, supports Reno County nonprofits focused on arts, education, and health. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entities. Priority is given to projects that align with the Fund's mission, particularly those addressing early childhood development and substance abuse prevention. This initiative aims to enhance community welfare and support innovative projects that foster growth and well-being.
